The Department's strategic location on one of the
Gulf's most productive bay systems and Galveston's semitropical climate provide
MARB students and faculty year-round access to a variety of intriguing and
environmentally-sensitive habitats comprising estuarine and marine ecosystems.
Students receive extensive exposure and invaluable training in the conservation
and management of Bay and Gulf ecosystems through intensive field work in salt
marshes, oyster reefs, seagrass meadows, rocky intertidal zones, open surf, and
coastal waters off Galveston.
MARB's diverse faculty and low student: professor ratio provide undergraduates
with unique opportunities to participate in world-class research
programs targeting a variety of marine related concerns. The MARB
faculty consists of 12 full time professors, one professor emeritus,
and one research scientist whose research interests
include molecular biology, microbiology, genetics, anatomy, taxonomy,
physiology, behavior and ecology of estuarine/marine flora and fauna.
The Gourman Report consistently regards MARB as one of the top
undergraduate marine biology programs in the nation. Texas A&M University at
Galveston is ranked among the top 500 schools in the nation by the
Time/Princeton Review and the as one of the "Best of the West" by US News
and World Report.
MARB graduates find employment with State and Federal agencies, private
industry, environmental consulting firms, biomedical laboratories and secondary
school systems. Many graduates enter professional schools in medicine,
dentistry, veterinary medicine and environmental law while others undertake
postgraduate studies in the biological and ecological sciences.
As the marine life sciences branch of Texas A&M University, MARB offers its
undergraduates three degree programs and one certificate program staged in a
unique coastal setting.
The degree programs are:
Marine Biology: A
general biology degree program which provides an excellent education
in the biological sciences through studies undertaken in a unique
coastal environment. The curriculum offers broad training in
comprehensive biology while emphasizing study in vertebrate zoology, coastal
& wetlands biology, fisheries biology, and aquatic animal health.
Marine Biology with a
License Option: Students in the Marine Biology program incorporate
courses from the Marine Transportation program leading to a Merchant
Marines Third Mates license.
Marine Fisheries:
Students are trained in the principles of fisheries management and
aquaculture including identification, sampling methods, and economics.
The Certificate program
is:
Biomedical Science/Marine
Biology: A program developed in conjunction with Texas A&M
University, College Station,
students prepare for veterinary or medical technology careers by
splitting their time and coursework between College Station and
Galveston Island to obtain the best courses that both campuses have to
offer in this field.
